water cyclinder --> water lamellae --> continuous water phase, for this system. In the lamellae region, the dispersion exhibited negative thixotropic and shear thicken properties. The bizarre rheological properties exhibited by the dispersion with water/oil ratios of 1 were explained in terms of ion-dipole association between oleate and hexanol molecules on adjacent dropletes, which was investigated as a function of pH, ratios of water and added salts. The composition and structure of the compound were identified by elemental analysis and H-1 NMR spectra. The properties of mixed monolayer of the compound with polar arachidic acid was described. The L-B films consisting of the mixed monolayer were deposited onto hydrophobic optical glass or quartz slides successfully. The UV-Vis absorption spectra were recorded in solution and in L-B films. The peak of maximum absorption of solution was at 396 nm while that of L-B films at 388.5 nm. It showed a small blue shift which is indicative of forming a H-aggregates in the L-B film. The position of absorption peak of different layers were not changed but the absorbance increased with the increasing number of layers. This confirmed that there was no molecular aggregates between adjacent layers and that the uniformity of successive monolayers vertically is good. The orientation of azobenzene chromophores in the L-B films were examined by polarized-light absorbance measurements. The diffraction patterns of L-B films were measured. The Bragg peaks were specified. The value of lattice spacing calculated from the Bragg formula was 5.49 nm. This indicated that the L-B films built up of azobenzene derivative were ordered multilayer films with periodic structure. The numbers of layers of various rare-earth tristearates could be formed up to 44 on a plate of hydrophobic glass at 25 mN.m-1, with a transfer ratio of 0.7-0.8. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) verified the presence of La, Nd, Sm, Eu and Tb respectively in corresponding films. IR suggested that no hydrolysis took place in the process of deposition. X-ray diffraction of films in low angle region (0.3-14-degrees) showed that the films are of periodic layered structure, the space of adjacent face of rare-earth ions is 4.7-4.8 nm. According to the area-time curves in the deposition of rare-earth tristearates, there may be a change of film\'s type. When both B and BHSCN are present in organic phase, the reaction is as follows: M2+ + 4SCN- + 2H+ + (x + 2)B(o) reversible (BH) 2M (SCN)4.x(B)(o) where x = 0 - 4. When only BHSCN is present in organic phase, the extraction of Co(II) is poor and Ni(II) can not be extracted. The extraction of Co(II) by BHSCN is as follows: Co2+ + 2SCN- + 2BHSCN(o) reversible (BH)2Co(SCN)4(o). The lack of free amine N1923(B) in organic phase is the reason of poor extractability of Co(II) in this case. And the nonextractability of Ni(II) by BHSCN is due to the presence of Ni(SCN)4.2H2O2- in the aqueous phase. When two coordination water molecules of the species Ni(SCN)4.2H2O2- are replaced by amine N1923 molecules, the extractability of Ni(II) will be enhanced. This can be observed from the result of Ni(II) extraction in the presence of B and BHSCN in organic phase. The effect of Schottky barrier on the open-circuit photovoltage was studied. Under the irradiation with the light intensity of 65 mW.cm-2, optimized output parameters of p/n+-Si cell were found to be as follows, V(oc), 0.530 V; I(sc), 47.6 mA.cm-2; fill factor, 0.35; light-electric energy converscion efficiency, 13.6% and some of the photoelectrochemical cells ware still stable while the irradiation continued for 75 hours.
