摘要:Pearl S. Buck is famous for her novels about China. However, this American novelist receives much censorship from the Chinese intellectuals because they are convinced that Buck misrepresents China in her works. As one of the most outstanding figures in Chinese modern literature, Mao Dun composed a short story A Ballad of Algae (1936) specifically to confront Buck’s The Good Earth (1931). Taking a comparative analysis as the methodology and Chinese rural morality as the theme, the article argues that the essential reason for divergence between Buck and Mao Dun lies in their pursuit of different literary objectives. Buck’s cultural orientation and Mao Dun’s political orientation result in their different understanding of the moral problems in the Chinese rural regions. © 2020, Akadémiai Kiadó, Budapest, Hungary.
